چکیده

In this article we present some numerical techniques to increase efficiency and applicability of a flow-based upscaling procedure used to solve single and multi-phase flows in naturally fractured reservoirs. These geological formations may be characterized by hundreds up to hundreds of thousands of fractures, ranging from small to medium scales, spreading all over the reservoir. In these scenarios numerical simulations using an explicit discretization of all fractures become rapidly unfeasible. The problem may be overcome by upscaling procedures. In this work we assume that the flow in the reservoir is simulated by using a corner-point grid completely unrelated to the fracture network. The presence of the latter is accounted for by a numerical upscaled procedure that employs an embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM). To characterize the scaled up problem, we consider a flow-based upscaling procedure where multiple sub-regions are used to derive transmissibilities, mean depths and pore volumes related to the degrees of freedom associated with fractures and rock matrix. An important aspect of the work with respect to others presented in the literature is the enhancement of the upscaling process by splitting the degrees of freedom associated with unconnected portions of the rock matrix. Numerical examples confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. We also compare two ways of setting up the boundary conditions of the local problems, that is a well known open issue, used to compute the upscaled transmissibility between cells. Though the experiments lead to a similar result, at the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that such a comparison is made for fractured reservoir. c ⃝ 2017 International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS). Permeability upscaling in fractured reservoirs using different optimized mother wavelets at each level

We use a multi-resolution analysis based on a wavelet transform to upscale a 3D fractured reservoir. This paper describes a 3D, single-phase, and black-oil geological model (GM) that is used to simulate naturally-fractured reservoirs. The absolute permeability and porosity of GM is upscaled by all the possible combinations of Haar, Bior1.3, and Db4 wavelets in three levels of coarsening. The ap...

A Novel Integrated Approach to Modelling of Depletion-Induced Change in Full Permeability Tensor of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

More than half of all hydrocarbon reservoirs are Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFRs), in which production forecasting is a complicated function of fluid flow in a fracture-matrix system. Modelling of fluid flow in NFRs is challenging due to formation heterogeneity and anisotropy. Stress sensitivity and depletion effect on already-complex reservoir permeability add to the sophistication. Horiz...

A Multiple-Continuum Approach for Modeling Multiphase Flow in Naturally Fractured Vuggy Petroleum Reservoirs

The existence of vugs or cavities in naturally fractured reservoirs has long been observed. Even though these vugs can be largely attributed to reserves of oil, natural gas, and groundwater, few investigations of vuggy fractured reservoirs have been conducted. In this paper, a new multiple-continuum conceptual model is developed, based on geological data and observations of core samples from ca...

Heterogeneity Preserving Upscaling for Heat Transport in Fractured Geothermal Reservoirs

In simulation of fluid injection in fractured geothermal reservoirs, the characteristics of the physical processes are severely affected by the local occurence of connected fractures. To resolve these structurally dominated processes, there is a need to develop discretization strategies that also limit computational effort. In this paper we present an upscaling methodology for geothermal heat t...

Improved teaching–learning-based and JAYA optimization algorithms for solving flexible flow shop scheduling problems

Flexible flow shop (or a hybrid flow shop) scheduling problem is an extension of classical flow shop scheduling problem. In a simple flow shop configuration, a job having ‘g’ operations is performed on ‘g’ operation centres (stages) with each stage having only one machine. If any stage contains more than one machine for providing alternate processing facility, then the problem...
